Poliovirus detected in Lasbela

ISLAMABAD: The National Institute of Health has confirmed the detection of Type-1 Wild Poliovirus (WPV1) in an environmental (sewage) sample collected from Lasbela district in January 2024.
According to Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) officials, the environmental sample was collected on January 23, 2024, from the Jamali Mohallah, UC Uthal (a one-time sampling site) in Lasbela district of Balochistan.
The isolated virus is classified as a YB3A cluster and is genetically linked to the virus detected in an environmental sample in Karachi East Gadap on December 13, 2023, with a similarity of 99.89%.
This new detection brings the total number of positive environmental samples in Pakistan in 2024 to 31.
