Call to make law for sanitation workers

LAHORE:A rights union has demanded the government revise the Punjab Labour Policy and include a special chapter in the labour policy about sanitation workers and take gradual steps on formulating a separate specialised law for sanitation workers.

Pakistan Workers Federation (PWF) secretary general Chaudhry Muhammad Saad in a press statement said that sanitation workers encounter perilous and hazardous work conditions resulting not only in occupational diseases, accidents, exposure to gases but they also sometimes die during work.

The Lahore Waste Management Authority (LWMC) is one of the biggest employer of sanitation workers in Lahore and it employs around 25,000 male and female sanitation workers, who on daily basis maintain and clean roads, drains and streets around the clock.

Pakistan Workers Federation secretary general demanded social security benefits for daily wage workers, maternity leave and relaxation in duties during pregnancy for sanitation workers.
