Former son-in-law held over woman’s killing
Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of an elderly woman in Gulistan-e-Jauhar. The arrested man, identified as Shahid Alam, is the former son-in-law of the deceased woman.
The murder case was registered at the Gulistan-e-Jauhar Police Station on the complaint of the deceased woman’s daughter. “Two suspects entered our house and attempted to throw acid on me. When acid was thrown at my hands, I ran towards the bathroom. They threw acid on my mother, and then they fled,” the daughter mentioned in the FIR.
The complainant nominated her former husband in the FIR. “The suspects attempted to harm me. My former husband divorced me six months ago. My two daughters are with my ex-husband and we have a dispute as he is not allowing me to meet them.”
The woman said she had received threats of physical harm just two days before the incident. The possible cause of the elderly woman's death is believed to be a severe head injury due to her falling on the ground in the acid attack, said the police.
Meanwhile, the arrested man’s brother has claimed that the woman was killed by her daughter who then falsely implicated her former husband in the case. Shahid’s brother, Zahid Alam, said in a video statement that the deceased woman, Tanveer Bano, was targeted with acid by her daughter Rabia.
He added that at the time of the incident, his brother was present in his office and it could be verified through all means. He said Shahid worked as an accountant in a private company, and he had divorced Rabia seven months ago because of her psychological instability.
Rabia was mentally unstable, Zahid said, adding that his brother was innocent and had been framed by his former wife in the case as she wanted to avenge her divorce. Police registered a case against Shahid based on a one-sided statement and arrested him, the suspect’s brother said.
