ISLAMABAD: A security alert has been issued by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police to a Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUIF) leader, former federal minister Maulana Asad Mahmood, advising him to restrict his movement during the election campaign.

The JUIF leader has been conveyed by the Dera Ismail Khan district police officer (DPO) through an advisory notice that he could be targeted by terrorists at his residence or during travel. “You are being advised to refrain from unnecessary traveling and attending public gatherings,” the notice said.

The police officer also advised Asad, also the son of JUIF chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, to keep his activities and movements secret and security on high alert.

The JUIF leader was also told that he should keep the security agencies apprised of his activities and movements to avert any untoward incident.

The advisory notice shared by the JUIF spokesman with the media was issued two days after a convoy of Maulana Fazl was allegedly attacked in DI Khan.

The JUI-F spokesman, while commenting on the latest security alert, said they have been receiving notices but the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and other authorities were taking no notice of them.

“Should we assume from such notices that there is some conspiracy behind such security alert,” he asked, alleging that the chief election commissioner makes non serious comments when the party talks about the matter.

He warned that the ECP, administration and judiciary would be responsible for any harm caused to any JUIF leader and worker. “The authorities cannot fulfill their responsibilities by issuing notices alone,” Aslam Ghori said.
