KOHAT: A jirga of 54 elders from Hangu, Kohat and Kurram districts and government authorities on Wednesday discussed ways and means to restore long-lasting peace to the sectarian-strife Kurram tribal district.

Held at the office of Kohat division commissioner, the session, attended by representatives of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, was aimed at finding a sustainable resolution. Governor Ghulam Ali, Corps Commander Peshawar General Hassan Azhar Hayat, Kohat Division Commissioner Muhammad Abid, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Kohat Range Sher Akbar Khan and other high-ranking officials called for maintaining peace.

Local elder Dr Abdul Janan Orakzai emphasised mutual cooperation for enduring peace, asserting that unity between the conflicting tribes was crucial for progress. He urged both communities to envision a prosperous future by resolving issues collaboratively and highlighting Kurram district as a tourist destination requiring collective efforts for its preservation.

“The elders and youths from both the sects must realise the gravity of the situation and exercise restraint in the best interest of the area,” he added. The elders assured their all possible cooperation in restoring peace in Kurram and elsewhere in the troubled areas.

Several people have been killed in clashes between warring tribes in parts of Kurram. The roads were blocked and the transportation and cellular network remained suspended and educational institutions were closed.
