MINGORA: Unidentified gunmen shot dead a local leader of the Awami National Party in Swat on Sunday, police officials said.
They said the gunmen opened fire on Jamshed Khan, the former nazim of Bamikhel Union Council belonging to the ANP in Manglawar village. He died on the spot.The police officials said Jamshed Khan was also member of the pro-government village defence committee. They said the assailants targetted him near a primary school located close to a police checkpost and managed to escape.
The security forces clamped curfew in Manglawar and surrounding area soon after the incident and launched a door-to-door search operation in a bid to apprehend the killers.The sources said the security forces arrested several suspects during the search.
The road leading to the hill-station Malam Jabba remained closed for traffic due to imposition of curfew in Manglawar. It caused hardships to the transporters and the commuters, who took much longer to reach their destinations.
The police lodged the case of murders against the unknown killers and started an investigation.It is worth mentioning that about 20 persons have been killed in target killing incidents in the Swat district in the last two months.
