Equal partners
This refers to the news report, ‘Ulema’s proposals to be included in women bill rules, says Rana Sana’ (March 25). Women constitute 48.43 percent of our total population. However, when we look at gender development in the country, we stand at 127th out of 160 countries. This shows the level of importance we give to women. This thinking is evident in the criticism the passage of the women’s protection bill has evoked among pseudo-religious leaders.
The bill should go a step further by also guaranteeing women independence of job and access to higher education. Only through empowerment will we be able to achieve women emancipation. The bill can be revised, but, it would be travesty of justice if it is repealed because we cannot progress unless we welcome women in sphere of our society as equal partners.
