MQM to mourn activists’ death countrywide today

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) will observe a day of mourning countrywide on Sunday (today) over the “murder” of its activists, said the Rabita Committee member Amin-ul-Haq here on Saturday. The MQM claimed that Malir Unit 97 in charge Syed Faraz Alam alias Rider was killed in police custody while Nadeem Ahmed of Orangi Town was murdered by terrorists.
The party said Alam was picked up by law-enforcers a few days ago and tortured to death, while Ahmed was killed by a banned outfit outside his house.
The MQM will observe a day of mourning countrywide and also stage demonstrations in the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Transporters and traders have been urged to suspend their activities in solidarity with the MQM.
The party has also demanded a judicial commission to probe the killings of MQM activists.
Meanwhile, talking to the media, MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi on Saturday said Faraz Alam was not wanted in any criminal case and the police had demanded at least Rs10,00,000 bribe from him. He said it had become a usual habit to arrest MQM workers and shift them to unknown places. According to the medical report, Alam was severely tortured, he said. “How could the Inspector General Sindh allow such a terrible act right under his nose?”
