How Taylor Swift is related to great American poet Emily Dickinson
Taylor Swift has previously credited Emily Dickinson for influencing her writing
Taylor Swift shares a bloodline with poet Emily Dickinson.
It appears that poetry runs in the genes for the international pop icon – known for writing her own songs – as she is related to someone who is regarded as one of the greatest American poets of all time.
Ancestry revealed to Today on Monday that the two historical icons are sixth cousins, three times removed.
“Swift and Dickinson both descended from a 17th century English immigrant (Swift’s 9th great-grandfather and Dickinson’s 6th great-grandfather who was an early settler of Windsor, Connecticut),” the outlet reported.
“Taylor Swift’s ancestors remained in Connecticut for six generations until her part of the family eventually settled in northwestern Pennsylvania, where they married into the Swift family line,” they revealed.
In 2022, Swift acknowledged Dickinson's influence when accepting the songwriter-artist of the decade award.
“If my lyrics sound like a letter written by Emily Dickinson’s great-grandmother while sewing a lace curtain, that’s me writing in the Quill genre.”
Swifties have also speculated that Evermore – Swift's ninth studio album – draws inspiration from Dickinson.
The album was released on Dickinson’s birthday – December 10, 2020 – and the title pays homage to the last words of Dickinson's poem, One Sister have I in Our House, which reads, “From out the wide night's numbers — Sue forevermore!”
Emily Dickinson was 55 years old when she passed away in 1886.
