LONDON: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his British counterpart David Cameron held a meeting in London on Saturday.
The two prime ministers exchanged views on bilateral relations and regional and global issues of mutual interest.
Prior to his meeting with David Cameron, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif attended a ceremony to commemorate 100 years of the Battle of Gallipoli.
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif is representing Pakistan in the ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the battle. The Gallipoli battle was fought between April 1915 and January 1916 in which some 45,000 soldiers of various countries were killed.
The prime minister arrived in Britain on Friday for a three-day visit during which he will hold meetings with British leaders. The commemoration was also attended by Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip, Prince Charles, Prime Minister David Cameron, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Labour Party leader Ed Miliband along with several leaders and representatives of Commonwealth countries as well as Turkey.
The year 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the battle in the Dardanelles Strait in the Canakkale province’s peninsula of Gallipoli in which there was a turnaround in favour of the Turks and other Ottoman citizens fighting in World War I against the Allied Forces.
The commemoration event was held at The Cenotaph, a memorial erected for those who took part in the campaign.
The prime minister along with other world leaders laid a wreath at the war memorial. British Queen Elizabeth II laid the first wreath followed by the British prime minister and others.
During his visit Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will also hold official talks on bilateral regional and global issues with his British counterpart. He is also expected to meet British leaders and business executives during this visit.
