Constitutional rule

By our correspondents
February 10, 2016

It is the constitution from where our elected representatives derive powers and legitimacy to perform their designated roles. Nowhere does the constitution grant any office-holder the power to intervene in the arrest of any criminal or individual involved in corruption and irregularities such as abuse of power, money laundering, illegal recruitment and grabbing state or private property, causing huge financial losses to the national exchequer.

Unchecked corruption by the ruling elite and powerful stakeholders has weakened rule of law and created an ideal environment for chaos and disorder to prevail in society. When crime goes unpunished, the black economy booms and attracts international criminals to seek their share in this tax-free black money. Terrorism has gained roots in the country because of weak law-enforcement as well as weak prosecution. In the words of Theodore Roosevelt: “No man is above the law and no man is below it, nor do we ask any man’s permission when we ask him to obey it”.
