EXCEPT some missionary schools, almost all the public and private educational institutions of the provincial metropolis reopened after extended winter vacation on Monday.
On the other hand, Aitchison College was closed once again on Monday owing to incomplete security arrangements and now the college would reopen on Jan 19 (Monday).
A number of government officials as well as Punjab Education Minister Rana Mashhood Ahmad visited various educational institutes and reviewed the security arrangements. It is learnt during a visit to Aitchison College a number of parents complained to the education minister about incomplete work of raising a portion of the college’s boundary wall.
The matter was also brought to the notice of Punjab Governor Ch Mohammad Sarwar. Afterwards, the college administration was asked to keep the campus closed until the completion of the work.
It is pertinent to mention here that educational institutions across Punjab, including Aitchison College were closed for winter vacation earlier this year in the wake of Peshawar school attack. The vacation had started from Dec 19.
Punjab Governor Ch Mohammad Sarwar also visited Aitchison College on Monday and reviewed the security arrangements. He said the college would reopen on Jan 19, after improving the security arrangements. It is learnt while some missionary schools have decided to reopen their campuses from Tuesday (today), there are few which will reopen on Jan 19, as these still needed time to complete security arrangements as per the security SOPs.
Sources in the School Education Department said that the schools had been directed to skip morning assembly for the time being in the wake of ongoing cold wave and using the same time to cover the educational loss because of the extended winter break.
Meanwhile, according to a press release in the light of the notification issued by the Punjab government, University of Management and Technology (UMT) has made the security arrangements more foolproof at its Johar Town Campus.
The UMT spokesperson said already eight feet long boundary walls of the university had now been covered up with two feet high fences while security cameras had also been installed on each and every corner of the campus.
