In our social life, marriage is the most cherished and lasting of all close relationships. The breakup of a relationship is painful, but when handled badly, a breakup has emotional repercussion that can lead to an increased
risk of early death. It is evident that divorced adults have a 23 per cent greater chance of dying early than married couples do. Subsequently more than half of the failed relationships are due to severe communication proximity gap between couples, says a press release.
It was stated by Prof. Dr. Masrur A. Khan of Institute of Media Sciences, Riphah International University, Pakistan while sharing his recent research outcomes about the influence of spousal communication on marital stability and perceived causes of divorce before august audience of the conference held on the Harvard University Campus. The 5-day International Conference for Social Sciences and Humanities organized by the International Journal of Arts and Sciences (IJAS) was attended by more than 200 scholars from all over the world.
Dr. Khan said: “A successful spousal communication includes all dimensions of communication such as information, emotion, energy, joint activity, participation and establishing relation that must be maintained by the time as it leads to growing trust among both the partners and significantly influences successful exchange of experience.”
He said that people’s positive attitude towards ups and downs of life hold the key to happiness and these attitudes subsequently reflect the kind of communication taking place between couples.
During his presentation, Dr. Khan explored empirically the influence of spousal communication on marital stability and perceived causes of divorce such as trust between husband and wife, personal appearance, communication proximity, similarity of attraction and mutual interest. He discovered that understanding verbal and nonverbal cues promotes peace and stabilises marriage.
“Maintaining an open and effective communication among couples reduces marital instability and reduces conflict among couples. However, main causes of divorce were reported as; no interest in domestic affairs, too busy in extracurricular activities, lack of emotional support, communication proximity, lack of trust and mutual attraction aside from financial problems,” he added.
