Researchers urged to learn modern technologies

A symposium on “Functional Nonmaterial’s for Catalysis and Energy Conversion” was held at University of Engineering and Technology on Monday.

UET Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid participated as chief guest. A number of distinguished speakers from prominent institutes like Dr Rizwan Raza, Dr Irshad Hussain, Dr Khuram Joya, Dr Rehana and other gave presentations. At the event Prof Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid said today’s era is the era of multidisciplinary engineering which is bringing revolution in every sector. To compete the world, it is dire need of time to adopt progressive, productive and result-oriented practices to provide better solutions in engineering and technology. He emphasised on academicians, researchers and other practitioners to learn all modern technologies to get grip over the scenario. He said UET is facilitating the learners to seek more and more knowledge theoretically and practically to ensure the real implementation of the skills at large for the betterment of the life of the masses. He said nanotechnology is potential sector which requires none areas to be explored. So in this regards, this segment must be focused to induce change in the technological sectors of modern world. At this occasion, Dean Faculty of Natural Sciences, Humanities and Islamic Studies UET Lahore Prof Dr Shahid Rafique was present and highlighted the importance of technical materials.

debate contest: A Punjab University (PU) team has swept first All Pakistan Parliamentary Debating Competition held at Punjab Medical College, Faisalabad. 

According to a press release, PU team ‘A’ won first position in Urdu parliamentary while in English parliamentary PU’s team ‘B’ clinched first position and Team ‘A’ remained runner-up as well. PU student Sameen Khan was declared best speaker for English while Erfa Khurshid was declared best speaker for Urdu as well.

PhDs: Punjab University has awarded PhD degrees to two scholars.

Asim Mahmood has been awarded PhD in the subject of Environmental Sciences after approval of his thesis entitled “Characterisation of Waste Water from Drains and Disposal Stations and their impacts on Three Southern Rivers of Punjab” and Arifa Iqbal in the subject of Urdu after approval of her thesis entitled “Criticism of Urdu Literature in English Language (In the light of published books)”. 

Meanwhile, the PU Examinations Department has declared the results of MSc Chemistry Part-I supplementary examination 2015. The detailed results are available at PU website www.pu.edu.pk.

Chinese language: Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (Tevta) will train 15,000 students in Chinese language course during current year as the course has already been started in five cities of Punjab. 

Tevta chairperson Irfan Qaiser Sheikh said this while reviewing the progress of Chinese language course on Monday. He said at present three-month course had been started at Govt College of Technology Railway Road, Lahore, Gujranwala, Govt Technical Training Institute Gulberg, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Rawalpindi, Govt Staff Training College Faisalabad, Govt Technical Training Institute for Women Township and Gujarpura, Lahore. He added Tevta was also planning to start this course in other cities of Punjab.

Irfan Qaiser Sheikh said the course was helpful for the Pakistani youth who intended to get job in Chinese Companies working in Pakistan and employment in China. He added the purpose to start this language programme of other cities was to make the already trained skilled labour force of Pakistan more acceptable in the Chinese market. 

UVAS: A one-week “In-service short-term training of university and college faculty members” started at the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) here on Monday.

The objective of the workshop is to equip faculty members with advanced teaching methodologies, sound communication skills and groom their personality.

Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) Chairperson Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin presided over the inaugural session of the training workshop while UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Talat Naseer Pasha, Dean Faculty of Bio-Sciences Prof Dr Habib-ur-Rehman and a large number of faculty members were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Nizamuddin said there was a need to simultaneously focus on research in disciplines of social and bio-sciences if we really wanted our country to progress. He added the PHEC had launched various initiatives for the uplift of college and university education. He said in-service short-term training of university and college faculty members had been launched across the province to enhance teaching and communication skills of teachers. He said the PHEC was planning to launch an “Education Research Cell” and was also working on a plan to convert degree colleges into community colleges.

Prof Pasha said the UVAS faculty was equally focusing on character-building of students besides imparting them knowledge and skills. He said the UVAS faculty members were actively involved in applied research and currently they were executing 85 research projects worth over Rs900 million won from national and international funding agencies.
