Says apex court can change ToRs; not afraid of accountability as even Musharraf couldn’t find anything against him during years-long probe; those desirous of their turn won’t  get it in this manner; only the people will emerge victorious; praises Shahbaz, describing him as man of action

LAHORE: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said he had presented himself before the Supreme Court for accountability.

The apex court, he said, can change the terms of reference (ToRs) and start a probe from his family.

Talking to intellectuals and senior journalists, the prime minister said some elements did not want to see him ruling the country as he had declared them enemies of development and prosperity. He said not a single scandal of the current government, which enjoyed the public’s support, had surfaced.

He said despite the efforts by opponents, the PML-N government always remained successful because of its development agenda. “Our political opponents are making criticism just for the sake of power.”

The prime minister vowed not to cease the process of development and overcome power loadshedding by 2018. He said the government was not afraid of accountability as former dictator Pervez Musharraf conducted accountability against him for nine years but was unable to find any wrongdoings.

Referring to PTI Chairman Imran Khan, Nawaz said those asking for their turn, were unaware that they would not get their turn in this manner. He added that peace had been restored in Karachi.

The prime minister said besides national development, Pakistan was also forging good ties at the regional and international levels and all important states including China and the United States desired to extend cooperation on development projects. He added that the Central Asian states had keen a interest in the development projects of Gwadar.

Earlier, Nawaz told a high-level meeting held at the Governor’s House that serving the nation was the only way to succeed and the government would accomplish the journey of development, prosperity and glory by 2018.

He said the days of negative politics were over and the masses had rejected politicians who wanted to create anarchy by any means. Only the people would emerge victorious at the end as they had rejected the politics of agitation and allegations and those pursuing a negative agenda, Nawaz remarked.

The meeting reviewed various development projects including that of infrastructure and provision of basic amenities across the country. Punjab Governor Rafique Rajwana, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, federal and provincial ministers, parliamentarians and top government functionaries were present on the occasion.

The premier said provision of basic amenities of life at the doorstep of the masses was necessary, adding that the government was committed to providing education, health, clean water and other facilities to the people across the country.

He said people’s problems would be resolved in their respective areas, adding the provision of basic facilities was also necessary in addition to mega projects. The masses would reap the maximum benefits of the development projects during the next two years, he noted.

Nawaz said the PML-N government had dedicated all its energies for serving the people and the development of the country.

He said the government would overcome loadshedding in the next two years as per its manifesto and as promised to the public.

The prime minister congratulated Shahbaz Sharif and Provincial Minister Malik Tanvir Aslam on the speedy completion of the rural roads programme.

He appreciated the performance of Shahbaz Sharif and his team regarding the completion of public welfare projects with speed, transparency and high standards. The chief minister was a man of action, he remarked, adding that Lahore and other cities of the province were making rapid progress due to the hard work, commitment and devotion of Shahbaz.

All the ongoing power, gas and infrastructure projects would be completed by 2018, he said.

Nawaz promised to devolve powers to the grassroot level and said the last phase of local government elections would be completed next month. –Agencies/Correspondent
