The right protest
This refers to the news report, ‘Why do those talking about Mayfair flats avoid Surrey Palace?’ (April 12). Chaudhry Nisar Ali has reacted to Imran Khan’s plans of staging a sit-in in Raiwind. The minister explained the negatives of the sit-ins staged in the federal capital in 2014 and how they hurt the prestige of the country abroad. But he conveniently forgot to mention the alleged corruption of the ruling family. Does this not hurt the country’s image?
If the government does not initiate the process of setting up a judicial commission to investigate the Panama Papers, then the PTI, all like-minded political parties and more importantly people have the right to demand Nawaz’s resignation.

The planned march to Raiwind by the PTI in the wake of the Panama Leaks seems to be mistimed and an overreaction. Street protests and ‘dharnas’ are always considered to be the last option in any political agitation/difference, but the news savvy and self-centred leader seems to have only one remedy for all our problems. One must take into account the ground realities before embarking on such suicidal missions. Such extreme actions lead towards anarchy. Already, most of the Muslim world is at the centre of political and social turmoil.
We too are coming out – though slowly – of a crisis of fighting a war of our survival after giving a lot of human and financial sacrifices. Political stability is the need of the hour. According to economic indicators and international surveys, the performance of the government is not bad either. Imran Khan should see beyond his nose. Rather, he can use this opportunity to his political advantage which may boast his and the PTI’s prospects of winning elections in the future. At the moment his leadership skills are hostage to the anti-Nawaz mantra, but now people are fed up with his hollow slogans. The PTI should prove its worth in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa first. Only then will people follow the party everywhere else.
