No need for Article 6 when it is not acted upon, says Rabbani
Karachi
The Senate chairman sarcastically said on Saturday that he would advise the government and political parties to have Article 6 of the Constitution had deleted after declaring it redundant as it had failed to defend the Constitution itself.
According to Article 6, someone who suspends or holds in abeyance the Constitution by use of force means shall be guilty of high treason.
Raza Rabbani, after attending the inauguration of two-day International Sufi Conference, was speaking in context of allowing former military ruler Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf safe passage to leave the country.
The Senate chairman said an article of the Constitution, which could not be acted upon, should be deleted by declaring it redundant.
He said the existence of the federation would be in danger in case the Constitution came under any attack.
“Nobody will be allowed to play with the fundamental structure of the Constitution,” he added.
To a question, Rabbani said that he would speak only on the recent matter of “Panama Leaks” when the issue landed in the Senate.
He said feudal landlords and religious extremists had virtually wiped out tolerance from the society. He added that diminishing level of tolerance was not just problem of the Pakistani society but that of South Asia and rest of the world.
He said the Sufi conference had provided a very good opportunity for soul-searching and introspection for everyone.
Rabbani said April 10 had been designated to be observed as the Constitution Day in the country.
