Road blocked in protest after death of student at KTH

PESHAWAR: Enraged by the sudden death of a fellow student at the Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH), students of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Agricultural University on Monday blocked the busy University Road for more than two hours for all types of vehicular traffic and demanded an impartial inquiry into incident.

Hundreds of students took to the main University Road after learning that their fellow student had died at the KTH. The protesting students accused the doctors of negligence that led to the death of the young student.

He was identified as Bahadur Ali, son of Said Bahadur Khan. He belonged to the Mardan district.Later Vice-Chancellor Agricultural University Prof Zahoor Swati and senior police officials also arrived and tried to convince the protesting students to open the road.

Farhad Khan, Media and Protocol Officer KTH, told The News that the student was brought to the hospital by his colleagues after having their lunch at the university canteen.“A colleague of the late student, Musa Khan told the doctors at the hospital casualty where he was first taken that he wasn’t feeling well after having a lunch at the canteen.

The doctors in casualty referred the student to the CCU where the staff conducted his ECG,” he said. He said the doctors started  his treatment but it didn’t help. After sometime, the doctors wanted to repeat his ECG but he expired at the CCU.

The students later informed their colleagues at the university and family members of the death. When the students and family of the late student arrived, they refused to shift his body from the hospital before taking action against the responsible staff.

The government later formed an inquiry committee headed by Medical Director Lady Reading Hospital (LRH), Dr Aamir Ghafoor to probe the cause of death of the student.Other members of the committee are Vice-Chancellor Prof Zahoor Swati, senior cardiologist Prof Dr Zahid Aslam Awan, head of Cardiology Department Hayatabad Medical Complex ( HMC) , Prof Hakim Afridi, head of Forensic Medicine Department of Khyber Medical College ( KMC) , Dr Nekdad Afridi, director KTH Human Resource department, Dil Roz Khan, member Board of Governors ( BoG) KTH, SP Cantt Kashif and the student, Musa Khan.

The committee will submit its report within three days.On assurance ?of the high-ups, the students later ended the protest and opened the road for traffic.
