ISLAMABAD: PTI’s central leader Dr Arif Alvi has said when he met former ECP chairman Fakhruddin G Ibrahim before the 2013 general elections, he pointed out objectionable conduct of the ECP members and showed his inability to force them to follow the set rules and procedures to hold free and fair elections in the country.
“When we met after the 2013 general elections, former ECP chairman Fakhruddin G Ibrahim admitted that the ECP members did the same what he was expecting from them because they did not follow rules and ignored honor and integrity of the prestigious institution,” he said while talking to The News.
Alvi said he and Ibrahim had been friends for the last 35 years and they used to exchange their views during meetings, adding “Fakhruddin was feeling helpless because the ECP members were not giving him due importance. I can guess that he was not happy over the state of affairs and then finally he was left with no option except to tender his resignation from his post.”
It is pertinent to mention here that Ibrahim, one of the country’s most respected jurists, oversaw the May 11, 2013 general elections of Pakistan but he resigned from his post on 30th July 2013, a week after the Supreme Court ordered the commission to hold presidential polls ahead of its original schedule.
He said: “Fakhruddin also told me that when the Supreme Court ordered to hold the presidential elections ahead of its original schedule, the ECP members did not bother to consult the issue with him.”
To a question, he said what he had claimed regarding Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim was the truth and he could also say it at any public forum because this was the time to make people know about things they did not know in the first instance.
“My meeting with Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim before the 2013 general elections was held in his office and the next time after the elections we met outside in the city. I again say he was not happy with the ECP members so I think it advisable for them to tender their resignations before the scheduled public meeting of the PTI in Islamabad,” he said.
