Islamabad: The Centre for International Peace and Stability (CIPS) at NUST organised a roundtable conference on ‘De-radicalisation’ in
collaboration with Hanns
Seidel Foundation. Former ambassadors, members
of the diplomatic community, academia, think tanks,
NGOs, NUST faculty members and students attended the event.
In his address of welcome, NIPCONS Principal Dr Shahid A. Hashmat underscored the need for learning de-radicalisation best practices from the world over and to suitably adapt these to the Pakistani context.
Kristof Duwaerts, resident representative of Hanns Seidel Foundation in Pakistan highlighted the importance of the event and to organize more meetings on the subject in the future.
Dr Tughral Yamin (Associate Dean CIPS) delivered a comprehensive presentation on de-radicalization initiatives Pakistan.
Dr Riffaat Hussain, HOD Government and Policy gave a scholarly presentation on the rise of radical thoughts in Pakistan.
Major Ali Baz, Pakistan’s former envoy to Jakarta explained the Indonesian model of de-radicalization.
This was followed by an open discussion on de-radicalisation processes.
The chief guest, Pro Rector (P & R) NUST Muhammad Shahid in his closing rem-
arks spoke about the exponential growth of radical ideologies propagated by transnational and regional
organizations. He also spoke about the need to dispel
theories like the Clash of Civilisations.
