LAHORE The Surgical Oncology Society Pakistan (SOSP) is organising its 7th International Cancer Surgery Conference from February 4, with a view to enhancing the quality of cancer surgery care in the country. More than 500 surgeons from all over Pakistan will participate in the state-of-the-art scientific conference. Founding President of the Surgical Oncology Society Pakistan, Prof Dr Arshad Cheema, said that cancer was one of the commonest killers of people all over the world, while it was the second leading cause of death in the country. As a majority of cancer patients are initially examined and managed by surgeons and surgery alone cures 60pc of cancer patients, while adjuvant radiation and chemotherapy therapy adds another 10-20pc to cure rates. Prof Arshad Cheema said that pre-conference live cancer surgery workshops will be held on 1st, 2nd and 3rd February at Khawaja Safdar Medical College, Sialkot, Services Institute of Medical Sciences, Lahore & King Edward Medical University, Lahore, respectively, where state-of-the-art laparoscopic and open cancer operations will be transmitted to participants from various surgical operation theatres. Speakers from UK, USA, France, Germany, Spain, Korea, India, Bangladesh, Middle East and all over Pakistan will deliver lectures live through video link and more than 50 surgeons will present their research work on cancer surgery. The highlight of the cancer surgery conference will be “Great Cancer Debate”, which will be participated in by stakeholders including Secretary Health, Principals of medical colleges, Directors of Shaukat Khanum Hospital, Inmol and civil society members.
