A nation cannot progress unless it finds a balance in conserving traditional ideas and simultaneously promoting contemporary ones.
The true achievement for any society is utilising its historical traditions as a foundation to build up modern societal structures through gradual progress.
“It’s great to glimpse into the collection of these paintings by great Pakistani artists, offering a range of fascinating and captivating ideas,” said Consul General of Switzerland in Karachi Emil Wyss while talking to The News at the Artscene Gallery on Thursday.
The gallery inaugurated an exhibition of legendary Pakistani artists entitled ‘Icons of Art from Pakistan’ where the council general was present as chief guest along with his wife.
He added that such activities were playing a vital role in presenting a soft look of the city.
“I am happy to see that Karachi is regaining its fame for cultural and literary activities,” he said.
Senior artist Mashkoor Raza, more famous for painting women and horses, looked jubilant at the exhibition.
“I usually avoid visiting art galleries these days, but I could not avoid this exhibition. The gallery has probably showcased the best collection of our very own artists,” he said in a jovial manner.
He said young artists must visit the gallery to discern the techniques and methods of those artists who had left their signatures in the field of arts.
According to alphabetical order, the gallery showcased the artwork of A R Nagori, Abdur Rehman Chughtai, Ali Imam, Ahmed Parvez, Anwar Jalal Shemza, Askari Mian Irani, Bashir Mirza, Colin David, Ismail Gulgee, Jamil Naqsh, Khalid Iqbal, Latif Chughtai, Sardar Muhammad Sadequain, S Safdar, Ustad Allah Buksh and Zahoor-ul-Akhlaq.
The gallery also printed a booklet containing a brief introduction and distinctions of these artists. The show will run till November 12.
