While congratulating Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s candidate Kunwar Naveed Jamil on his victory in the NA-246 by-poll, the runner-up candidate of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Imran Ismail, expressed reservations over the performance of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Addressing a joint post-election press conference at PTI’s media cell along with the city president Ali Zaidi, he claimed that the ECP had failed to conduct the hotly-contested election properly.
He questioned the ECP’s failure to take action over the violence that erupted before and after the election. However, Ismail focused on the positives too, stating that this was the first time in the past 25 years that the NA-246 constituency saw a real electoral contest.
“I would like to congratulate the MQM on its victory. However, this was also a victory for the voters of NA-246 as they realised the true value of their vote. I congratulate all those voters who used their right of franchise and those who preferred to stay at home must come out in future elections,” said Ismail, as he thanked the people of NA-246 for their respect and support.
Ali Zaidi also congratulated the MQM and hoped that Jamil would work for the area and improve residents’ living conditions.
“I salute the courageous and brave polling agents of PTI and workers for maintaining patience in a hostile atmosphere and environment.”
He condemned what he termed the aggressive behavior of MQM supporters on election day, in particular the incident at Karimabad, and urged the Muttahida leadership to take action against the supporters who spoilt the election atmosphere.
