PESHAWAR: Acting Chief Election Commissioner Justice Shakirullah Jan on Tuesday said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was ready to hold local or general elections anytime after July 2012.
Addressing a seminar, Justice Shakirullah Jan expressed his concern that the Statistics Division did not complete its work and the ECP was facing difficulties in this regard. He said computerised electoral rolls would be completed this month and general elections could be held anytime after that. He said the names of all citizens holding computerised national identity card had been included in the electoral rolls.
“We are trying to manage the financial affairs, including the expenditure on elections, under which the expenditure limit for a provincial assembly election has been fixed at Rs1 million and for National Assembly election at Rs1.5 million,” he said.
Justice Shakirullah Jan said the ECP would be responsible for monitoring the elections while the maintenance of law and order in the provinces was the core responsibility of the government.
