PESHAWAR: Mulla Abdul Salam Zaeef, who was Afghanistan’s ambassador to Pakistan during the Taliban rule, has migrated from Kabul to the United Arab Emirates, reliable sources said on Saturday.

The sources told the Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) that Zaeef along with his family left for Dubai about a week ago.

The sources said his migration to the UAE is aimed at playing his role to arrange peace talks between the Taliban and Afghan government.

“Mulla Zaeef will motivate the Taliban to hold direct talks with the Afghan government so that the Afghan conflict could be ended through negotiations among the Afghans,” the sources said.

Zaeef served as the Taliban ambassador in Islamabad when Pakistan arrested and handed him over to the United States in January 2002. He was detained at the Guantanamo Bay for few years. He wrote a book on the Guantanamo Bay prison after he was released and it has been translated into many languages.
