This refers to the letter, ‘National dress’ (October 7) by Sajid Ullah. The writer has emphasised promoting our national dress as obliged under Article 251 of the constitution. In addition to promoting the national dress, the government should also try to implement the SC decision vis-a-vis making Urdu our national language.
It is unfortunate that during his address at the UNGA, Nawaz Sharif was not only attired in western dress but also made his speech in English. The point is not to criticise our PM’s clothing but to emphasise that it is occasions like the UNGA sessions where we should be seen officially promoting our culture. All government officials should wear the national dress and use Urdu as the medium of communication.
