Defence Day this year is being celebrated as the golden jubilee year of the 1965 war victory against a four-time bigger enemy. The day is observed to eulogise the sacrifices and acts of valour of our soldiers.
India on the other hand is also claiming victory in the 1965 war and wrongly projecting it through its effective media. On our part, one sees a lack of knowledge and cohesion in the media. It seems we are not fully aware of the ground realities vis-a-vis the 1965 war. We need to understand the circumstances and events that led to the war and how the nation came as one to back its armed forces and defeated the enemy on many fronts. The point is: if India won the war why did it rush to seek the UN’s help for a ceasefire? Obviously, this war affected the economies of both the countries but this is a natural outcome of wars. There is a need to rewrite our military history with eyewitness accounts to deter India’s media onslaught. Also, we need to highlight and teach people why, despite having fought three wars, the issue of Kashmir has not been resolved so far.
