The British have just commemorated 100 years of the Battle of Gallipoli in which 45,000 soldiers of the European countries were killed and many more wounded. Atatürk was the hero of Gallipoli. He had put his life on the line for the defence of Turkey. Atatürk revolted and saved Turkey when the caliph had already surrendered to the western powers.
Consequently, the dictatorial system of government was packed up and Turkey was transformed into a modern democratic state – all by the efforts of Atatürk. ‘Grey Wolf – The biography of Ata Turk’ was a constant companion of Jinnah on his bed side table so much that young Dina nicknamed her father, the Grey Wolf. In the story of Gallipoli and Atatürk and in the decline of the Ottoman Empire there are plenty of lessons for Pakistan to learn.
