The Dowry and Bridal Gifts (Restriction) Act, 1976, is one such act that desperately awaits the attention of our lawmakers. It restricts the amount spent on dowry to Rs5,000. The amount of cash and gifts given to a bridegroom likewise cannot exceed the same amount. The value of a present to a newlywed couple may not exceed Rs100. Whoever contravenes this law would be punished with six months jail and (or) Rs10,000 fine.
Under the current economic conditions, these limits are ridiculously low. It is a weak law. More than 90 percent couples are probably unaware of this law.
