It is unfortunate that the PML-N has been unable to grasp the essence of governance. This is reflective from its appointment of Chaudhry Muhammad Barjees as the Gilgit-Baltistan governor just before the elections in the region. He does not even belong to Gilgit-Baltistan. Barjees’ only virtue is that he is a party loyalist.
For the PML-N, the definition of governance lies in the concentration of power and entertaining its disgruntled party members with political slots at the cost of underrepresentation of the local populace. Already bearing the brunt of our leaders’ past follies, Pakistan can no more afford a repeat of such mistakes. Everyone – all political parties, civil society, media and people – should put pressure on the PML-N to respect the wishes of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
