This refers to the letter, ‘Field Marshal Raheel Sharif’ (February 4) by Hameed Akhtar Niazi. Yes, Gen Raheel can be considered for the rank of field marshal only after he successfully brings the war against terrorism to a ‘conclusive end’ as was done by Gen (r) Fonseka of Sri Lanka, who was granted a marshal’s rank after he successfully defeated the Tamil insurgency.
If terror incidents and attacks like the APS and other bombings, etc, still continue in the country even after Gen Raheel’s retirement then this step seems a little out of place.
