The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) announced on Monday it had busted a gang of extortionists and arrested two suspects with the help of the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).

The arrests were made in raids conducted in Korangi and Federal B Area by a joint team of the SIU and the CPLC East Zone.

The swoops followed the registration of a complaint by a citizen at the  CPLC East Zone on January 12.

The affected citizen said the extortionists had demanded one million rupees. Acting on the complaint, a CPLC team immediately started working on technical data and gathered valuable information. On January 14, gunshots were fired upon the complainant in his vehicle in the Korangi area. Luckily, he escaped unhurt.

SIU and CPLC officials had to carry out several raids as the extortionists were not staying at one place for more than a few hours. However, in-depth technical data analysis and timely information gathered by the CPLC resulted in the arrest of an alleged extortionist, Imran, in the Korangi area and another suspect, Rehan, in Federal B Area on January 28. The two were involved in making extortion calls, firing on the vehicle of the complainaint and harassing citizens.   Law enforcers are questioning the two to ascertain their links with any other criminal groups.
