ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s active Covid-19 cases on Sunday rose to 55,720 after 2,819 more people tested positive for the contagion in a 24-hour-period, while the test positivity ratio exceeded 6.32 per cent.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the number of disease-infected people stood at 1,004,694. A total of 23,016 people died of the disease including 45 patients who died over the last 24 hours, the NCOC said, adding that 2,573 critical patients were currently under treatment in hospitals across the country.

The maximum ventilators were occupied in four major cities, including Islamabad 38 per cent, Lahore 20 per cent, Peshawar 15 per cent and Karachi 15 per cent. The maximum oxygen beds were occupied in Gilgit 50 per cent, Karachi 46 per cent, Rawalpindi 24 per cent and Muzaffarabad 28 per cent. Around 278 ventilators were occupied elsewhere in the country while no Covid affected person was on ventilator in Balochistan, and Gilgit Baltistan (GB).

Sindh province has been the worst hit with 364,784 cases, followed by eastern Punjab province where the disease was detected in 352,682 people. A total of 925,958 have recovered from the disease in the country, the NCOC added.

It comes as NCOC chief Asad Umar said total Covid vaccinations carried out so far in the country now exceeded the mark of 25 million. “Total number of people vaccinated has now crossed two crores. Further acceleration is being planned for August,” he tweeted. He said by the end of August, the target had been set for all major cities to have at least 40 percent of the eligible population vaccinated.

On Saturday, the planning minister urged citizens to get vaccinated and follow the standard operating procedures as the risk of the disease is not over yet. Meanwhile, Pakistan has made Covid-19 vaccination certificates mandatory for domestic air travel.

Travellers will be required to carry proof of vaccination when taking domestic flights starting from August 1.
