Strange proposal

June 14, 2021

An MPA from the Sindh Assembly recently presented a bill that proposed to make it mandatory on parents to marry off their children once they turn 18. This ridiculous suggestion just shows the misplaced priorities of our lawmakers. First, the lawmaker should answer whether the important issues that directly affect young people – for example, access to high-quality education, decent jobs, etc. – have been resolved by the government. Also, 18-year-old people are not mature. They still rely on their parents and guardians for a lot of things. A person doesn’t even complete his/her education at the age of 18. How will s/he find a reasonable job with decent pay to support his/her parents, family, and spouse?

The content of the bill is extremely condemnable as no religion and constitutional provisions bound parents to get their children married at a specific age. Such bills should be thrown into the bins. Our lawmakers should focus on how they can reduce the miseries of the already downtrodden segments of our society.
