Minister for Science and Technology & Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain inaugurated the three-day International Symposium on 'Light and Life' at the Comsats Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) from October 14-16.
A part of UN’s year-long celebration of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies, the event will highlight the latest research at various universities across the country, including Comsats Institute of Information Technology (CIIT). Some of these activities include R&D programmes in Lasers and Photonics, along with latest developments taking place in the field across the globe.
The symposium kicked off with the remarks by the CIIT Rector Dr. S.M. Junaid Zaidi, who welcomed the speakers and participants, and wished them a good learning experience. The symposium’s overview was given by Professor Dr. Aslam Khan, chairman of the event’s organizing committee, informing that the event is intended to provide a platform for discussing advancements in light, its sources, properties and interactions, and its role in sustaining and enhancing the quality of life and would comprise 16 parallel technical sessions, 10 plenary talks, 13 invited talks, 25 contributed talks and 25 poster presentations. The speakers, apart from Pakistan, hail from Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Germany, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Sudan, Turkey, UK, and USA and over 175 participants, including researchers, faculty members, engineers, graduate and senior undergraduate students have registered for the event.
“The key is in developing well-coordinated programmes in collaborations with national and possibly regional, as well as international groups and centres of excellence,” stated the Minister.
