World Mental Health Day was observed in Pakistan, like the rest of the world, with the theme “Dignity in Mental Health” on Saturday.
Besides some government-sponsored events in the provincial metropolis, a number of NGOs organised events to mark the day. A function was held at Punjab Institute of Mental Health where Director General Health Punjab Dr Zahid Pervaiz said that mental health care was a joint responsibility of the government, private sector, NGOs, civil society and families. He also said all stakeholders needed to work hand-in-hand to prevent mental illness and rehabilitation of affected persons.
Medical Superintendent Dr Nasir Bhatti, psychiatrists Dr Tahir Pervaiz, Dr Irum Bukhari, Friends of PIMH, representatives of NGOs, civil society, doctors, nurses and inmates of the institute participated in the function. Addressing the meeting, the psychiatrists said respect to others was essential for mental and physical health and 50 percent physical health problems could be reduced by resolving psychiatric issues.
The inmates of the institute sung ghazals and lyrics of renowned artistes and presented other performances which were highly appreciated by the participants.
Meanwhile, Punjab Minister for Food Bilal Yasin inaugurated a trauma center being set up in District Headquarters Mian Munshi Hospital, Lahore, at a cost of Rs 32.594 million.
The minister was told that construction of the trauma center would be completed within a year which included a basement and a lower ground. MS Muhammad Amir said that laboratory, blood bank, X-ray room, CT Scan, children ward, duty staff rooms, store, radiology, waiting room, lift and bathrooms would be constructed in the basement while sterilisation, operation theater and parking would be available at the lower ground.
