Instead of using the discretionary powers of Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, the Sindh government for the first time on Thursday under a centralised process formally invited applications for appointing chairmen of six educational boards in the province.
The applications have been invited for positions of chairmen at the board of intermediate and secondary education of Larkana, Mirpurkhas and Sukkur districts, besides the boards of secondary education and intermediate education in Karachi.
Moreover, applications have also been invited for the position of chairman of Sindh Board of Technical Education whose controlling authority has recently been transferred from governor to the chief minister, after the passage of an amendment bill from the provincial assembly.
The prospective candidates for the position of educational boards’ chairmen can send applications till October 25, 2015, under a centralised process.
A search committee appointed by Sindh government will make all these appointments, on the lines of a similar body comprising government officials and senior academicians which decides appointments at coveted academic posts, such as the post of vice chancellor of public sector universities in the province. The search committee is meant to make the appointment process for coveted academic posts more transparent and meritorious instead of using discretionary powers by the controlling authority, be it the chief minister or the governor. The chairman of Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Hyderabad was recently appointed through the recommendation of the search committee. The applicants should have minimum qualification of a masters’ degree or equivalent, while preference would be given to academicians having a PhD degree in social sciences. The applicants must have experience of 17 years or more of teaching or administrative job experience at BPS-17 or above in government service. The applicants should not be of more than 62 years of age.
