Tiger force

April 06, 2020

This refers to your excellent editorial ‘Corona relief force’ (April 2). You rightly question the rationale behind Prime Minister Imran Khan’s project of formation of a ‘Corona Relief Tiger Force', coordinated by the youth affairs minister, which will help the government in its relief efforts. One could expect such a step from a private individual but definitely not from the prime minister of a country which, as you rightly claim, already has the government machinery at the central and local levels; international organizations working in various regions in Pakistan; and local support organisations which already have a large pool of volunteers; and could recruit more, if needed.

With this large pool already present, there really was no need for Imran Khan to assemble another force of volunteers, recruited without proper scrutiny and who, considering themselves answerable only to Imran Khan, could create friction and disciplinary problems instead of providing additional, useful help. The problem is that never having worked in any large or even a medium-sized institution, Imran Khan failed to grow, develop and to cultivate a temperament to work in a coordinated manner within a large group.
