KP varsities defying governor’s order on fee waiver

PESHAWAR: Students from flood-hit Chitral district on Tuesday said that some of universities were reluctant to comply with the governor’s directives about exempting them from paying fee for one academic year.
Talking to reporters here, students from Chitral said that University of Agriculture had told them that students admitted on self-finance basis were not exempted from paying fee. They said that a few universities where students had deposited their fees were not returning them the amount, adding that they had not received any circular from the governor.
The students asked the governor to take notice of the situation and direct the universities to include the self-finance students in the exemption scheme.
Governor Sardar Mahtab Ahmad Khan had directed all public sector universities of the province in August to exempt students belonging to Chitral from fee for an academic year.
The directive was issued after flash floods caused destruction across Chitral and paralysed the routine life. The calamity damaged several villages and destroyed crops whereupon a press release was issued to media houses from the Governor’s Office.
The statement said, “The governor felt the agonies of the dwellers of Chitral district in the aftermath of natural calamity and viewed that in that hour of difficulty the people of the district deserve maximum relief.”
