Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shalwani determined the new prices of roti and naan on Tuesday.

According to a notification issued by the commissioner’s office, price of 120 gram's dough ball naan was Rs10 while the price of 110 gram's dough ball roti was Rs8. The official rates would be displayed at all roti shops.

In exercise of powers conferred under section 3(2) (a) of the Sindh Essential Commodities Price Control and Prevention of Profiteering and Hoarding Act, 2005 and in pursuance of services, general administration and coordination department, the government of Sindh after consultation with concerned stakeholders had fixed the prices of naan and roti in Karachi with immediate effect and in public interest, the notification said.

The owners of roti shops were asked to place a digital weighing machine to enable consumers to check dough ball weight. The notification barred all shopkeepers from wrapping naan and chapati in newspapers as the ink was extremely unhealthy for human consumption.

The Environment Climate Change and Coastal Development of the Sindh government had forbidden the use of non-degradable plastic bags, according to the notification. The owners were also directed to ensure hygiene of their workers, ovens and baking areas. Despite the issuance of the notification, roti and naan are being sold at previous prices.
