A man convicted of murdering a woman and her daughter was hanged at the Karachi central jail on Wednesday morning.
An anti-terrorism court had issued Shahid Mehmood’s black warrants last week and all he had ran out of all legal options that could prevent his hanging
Mehmood had killed Shamim, wife of ASI Ghulam Mujtaba, and their daughter, Nadia, by stabbing them to death on September 17, 1988 while committing a robbery at their house in the Napier police limits. He was arrested a few days after the incident.
An anti-terrorism court had sentenced Mehmood to death on December 23, 1988 and the Sindh High Court had dismissed his appeal against the conviction on August13, 1999.
The convict had approached the Supreme Court but the apex court too rejected his appeal. Later, the president of Pakistan also rejected his mercy appeal in the year 2000.
On Tuesday night, Mehmood’s family met him for the last time at the central prison and in the early hours of Wednesday, he was sent to the gallows in the presence of a judicial magistrate and jail officials.
His body was handed over to his family and they took it to their ancestral area for funeral and burial.
Besides the death sentence, the court had also handed down a 10-year prison term to Mehmood for committing the robbery.
According to the prosecution, Mehmood, along with his accomplice, Mohammad Khan, had entered the house of the ASI and killed his spouse and daughter while robbing their house.
