Opposition seeks more time to finalise names for ECP members

It is expected that the Parliamentary Committee will finalise and announce the names of two members of the ECP today (Wednesday).

ISLAMABAD: The opposition has sought more time for consultation on the matter of the appointment of the members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in meeting of the parliamentary committee on appointment of chief election commissioner and members of ECP.

It is expected that the Parliamentary Committee will finalise and announce the names of two members of the ECP today (Wednesday).

The Parliamentary Committee was moving inches towards the positive outcome as it agreed on the name ofthe member ECP from Balochistan but the deadlock between the PPP and PML-N on the name of member from Sindh with seeking time for further consultation on it.

The meeting of the Parliamentary Committee was held with the chair of its Chairperson Minister for Human Rights Dr Shireen Mazari here on Tuesday to consider the names of members of ECP from Sindh and Balochistan.

Sources said it was decided in the meeting that agreement reached between the government that one member be selected from names given by the government and one nominee from opposition and under the agreed formula the consensus reached on the name of Naveed Jan Baloch from Balochistan while for the Sindh the opposition has sought for more time and it will be finalised in the meeting of the committee today (Wednesday).

After the opposition sought time for further consultation, the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee has been reconvened today (Wednesday) to finalise the name of the names of members of the ECP from Balochistan and Sindh and it is also expected that the final names would also be announced today (Wednesday) prior of Session of the National Assembly, which is also scheduled to be started from today (Wednesday).

Talking to the newsmen after the meeting Dr Shireen Mazari said that they are moving towards the consensus as the opposition has sought more time for the further consultation and hoped that they will reach on consensus as both sides are cooperating. “We will announce the names for the post of the members of ECP from Sindh and Balochistan Wednesday before the session of the National Assembly,” she said.

PPP member of the Parliamentary Committee and former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said it was an important matter of choosing the members for the important institution and discussions were going on. “Our aim is only to make appointment on merit,” he said.

PML-N member of the Parliamentary Committee Senator Mushahidullah Khan said that the efforts were being made to create a consensus and to select the capable and experienced person for the important job. He said the politics is name of give and take and the work is going on this direction.
