KARACHI: Aqeel Khan, Abid Ali Akbar, and Yasir Khan won their respective matches on the opening day of PTF Invitational Masters Tennis event at Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad, on Thursday.
In the first match, Aqeel beat Muhammad Abid 6-3, 6-1, 6-2.
Aqeel was in supreme form and did not allow his opponent to settle down throughout the match.
In the second match, Yasir Khan defeated Asad Ali Siyyid, a young lad from Canada.
It was evident that Asad had not fully recovered from the stomach ailment he developed on coming to Pakistan.
Yasir won the first set 6-3. In the second set, Asad looked dehydrated and was unable to play his natural game. Yasir took the next two sets 6-2, 6-1.
Abid beat Shahzad Khan 7-6 (2), 1-0 (retired). In the first set, the score reached 6 all as both players held their respective service games. The set was decided on a tiebreak in favour of Abid and in the second set when Abid was leading 1-0 Shahzad threw in the towel conceding the match on medical grounds.
Aqeel is to face Asad, Abid takes on Ahmed Chohdri, Muhammad Abid is up against Hamza Mehmood, and Shahzad is drawn against Yasir.
The matches are being played on round robin basis, best of five sets, to provide the same competitive environment as that of Davis Cup.
