After long hours deliberation, Administrator Karachi Metropolitan Corporation announced the handover of the KMC-run portfolios of health, education and local taxes to the District Municipal Corporation on the grounds of “extreme dissatisfaction over the performance of the KMC officers.”
Addressing a joint meeting of KMC and DMC officers in the Committee Room of Civic Centre, Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui, said that the citizens of Karachi were facing mammoth administrative issues in presence of a strongly mandated civic administration. He lamented that even though two years have been passed since the approval of the Local Government Act 2013 (SLGA 2013) but still the municipal bodies have failed to perform.
Siddiqui stressed the need of implementation of powers conferred to local bodies so that the problems of citizens could be solved without delay. The distribution of powers, resources and assets for this purpose should also be in accordance to the law, he noted.
The meeting was also attended by Metropolitan Commissioner Samiuddin Ahmed and the respective administrators of the district municipal corporations.
Officers and legal experts of the KMC also gave a detailed briefing on the division of responsibilities under the SLGA 2013. It was also decided in the meeting that transfer to the DMCs should be implemented without delay; furthermore, a committee headed by the metropolitan commissioner would be responsible to supervise the transition of mandate.
