NAWABSHAH: Some families travelling from Punjab to Karachi and Karachi to Punjab have claimed that police personnel are stopping car riders at illegally set-up checkpoints near the Moro Bypass and demanding extortion money. They say these police personnel are wearing black (militia) uniforms and holding government issued weapons.
The head of a family coming from Punjab said that policemen of the Moro Police Station stopped cars and demanded driving licences, vehicle documents and even identity cards of women passengers.
He said despite showing all the relevant documents, these policemen misbehaved with the passengers and threatened them of dire consequences if they did not pay them the extortion money.
One Muhammad Naveed told The News that he was going to Karachi from Islamabad. “When I reached near the Moro Bypass, I was stopped by the police, who demanded papers of my car besides license,” he said. “After checking papers and license, the cops demanded Rs10,000 extortion money.” He said that he offered Rs2,000 instead of the demanded money. He said he finally had to pay Rs5,000 to continue his journey to Karachi.
