Punjab CM urged to take note of IJT ‘hooliganism’

LAHORE: The Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) has demanded Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to take notice of the growing hooliganism of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) at the varsity alleging the police were protecting the student group.
PUASA President Dr Hassan Mobeen Alam, Secretary Dr Mahboob Alam, Chairman PU Hall Council Dr Muhammad Akhtar and others while addressing an emergent press conference on Friday said while the varsity held a flag hoisting ceremony in connection with the Independence Day early in the morning on Friday, some IJT activists with the help of outsiders tried to hold a similar event in the afternoon without seeking permission from the university administration. They added when the Jamiat activists were asked as to why they were organising the event involving outsiders and without permission, the IJT activists got infuriated and attacked the varsity officials.
The PUASA leaders said PU Resident Officer-II Malik Zaheer was badly injured in the attack and was rushed to the Shaikh Zayed hospital while Resident Officer-I Dr Sajid Rasheed, Assistant Professor Dr Muhammad Shafiq and security guards Pervaiz and Abdul Malik also got injured.
The PU teachers alleged that the police were protecting the student group and after any such unfortunate incident every time, the varsity administration was pressurised instead of taking action against the Jamiat.
The PUASA leaders demanded the chief minister to take notice of the incident and purge the varsity of elements involved in violent activities at the campus. Meanwhile, a PU spokesperson has also condemned the incident and said elements involved in the incident did not deserve leniency.
