KARACHI: President Mamnoon Hussain being the Chancellor of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology, has sacked the Vice Chancellor Dr Zafar Iqbal on Monday.
The Fuuast VC was charged with malpractice, corruption and misuse of authority and powers.
The Fuuast Senate passed a resolution in its meeting held on Saturday in Islamabad to dismiss the service of Dr Iqbal. The senate unanimously approved the resolution to remove Dr Iqbal with immediate effect in terms of Section 12 (5) of the Fuuast Ordinance, 2002. Deputy Chairman Senate Javed Ashraf headed the varsity’s senate meeting and under the reports of Review Panel, Fuuast Senate found Dr Iqbal guilty and responsible for charges framed against him.
Justice (retd) Haziq Al-Khari of Federal Shariat Court conducted the inquiry and investigated the charges. The Fuuast Senate has also sent three names to the president for the vacant post of the VC so that he could approve any one of them.
Dr Saluman D Muhammad, dean at the Fuuast, former VC Fuuast who is current VC at the University of Karachi, Dr Muhammad Qaiser and former head of the Sindh University’s Geology Department Parveen Ahktar Usmani are the candidates for the Fuuast VC-ship.
The varsity Senate also recommended that all charges against Dr Iqbal should also be sent to NAB and FIA for further investigation. As per Senate’s proposal, his name should be kept in the exit control list as well. The President Order No Dir Coord II 229/39 (23)/2015 was issued to inform the university’s administration and others about the decision.
The majority of the Fuuast teaching and non-teaching staff accused Dr Iqbal for misusing his powers for more than a year.
They claimed Dr Iqbal had file a petition in the Sindh High Court to save his seat but it was rejected by the Court and additional charge was given to the KU VC. However, Dr Iqbal made a comeback and resumed his seat but finally the president removed him from the service, they stated.
“Dr Iqbal had challenged Fuuast Senate previous meeting in which participants proposed to send Dr Iqbal on long leave till the investigation against him get completed. Justice (retd) Khari had issued 1000-paper charge sheet and given 21 day-time to respond but Dr Iqbal never come forward to face it, they claimed.
