Ana alleged Lyari-based gangster and his sister were arrested for trying to extort money from a trader in Kharadar on Saturday.
Kharadar SHO Mohammad Akber said a complaint was registered by Mohammad Taqi, the owner of a spices shop near Allah Rakha Park in Kharadar, with his police station on July 31.
In his compliant, the trader had stated on July 29, a young man and a woman had visited his shop asked for some spices. During that, the woman had handed over a paper to him and told him to call the person whose name was written on it or face the consequences.
The paper contained the number of a notorious gangster, Zahid alias Shooter Commander of the Wasee Lakho Group of Lyari, and told the trader to pay Rs0.2 million. When Taqi called the number, Zahid responded and threatened him of dire consequences.
The trader tried to negotiate with the extortionists on the amount, but when they could not reach a settlement, he approached the police. The SHO said the police had lodged an FIR under sections of the extortion and terrorism laws and started negotiating with the gangsters on the amount of money. When they the gangsters settled at Rs50,000, the police called them to Taqi’s shop.
Zahid sent the same man and woman to the shop to collect the money.
When they reached there, the policemen deployed at nearby shops waited until they took the money and then arrested them.
They were identified as Junaid Memon and his younger sister Quratul Ain alias Phoolan Devi. The siblings were involved in extorting traders for the past many months.
Memon used his sister as the front person to deliver extortion slips.
They were found in possession of a pistol and their motorcycle, a stolen one, was seized. A case was registered against the siblings.
