LONDON: Former England captain Mike Brearley has apologised to England and Wales Cricket Board president Giles Clarke for calling him an “employee”.
Brearley, the chairman of MCC’s world cricket committee, made his comments on Tuesday while giving a news conference at Lord’s in which he suggested the ECB had softened its once hardline opposition to cricket being included in the Olympic Games since Colin Graves replaced Clarke as chairman earlier this year.
Clarke was subsequently appointed to the newly-created post of ECB president, where his duties include representing the board on the International Cricket Council, the sport’s Dubai-based global governing body.
Brearley, welcoming what he saw as the ECB’s greater willingness to contemplate cricket in the Olympics said that Clarke, as president, was an “an employee of the board and has to report to the board. He has to do what he’s told”.
