Indirect nomination of women in LG polls flayed

MULTAN: Civil society organisations Monday rejected an indirect women nomination procedure in local government elections. Different NGOs through a video conference have decided to oppose any attempt on the part of the Punjab government to fill reserved seats of marginalized groups through indirect method. The NGOs criticized the Punjab government for bringing such a procedure as it would undermine women representation. The bodies said the indirect election on women seats is against the Constitution and devolution of powers because in this way powerful elements would nominate their touts. The civil society is planning an aggressive drive against the procedure after Eid across the province. The NGOs also took a note of a news item that the Punjab government is planning to reduce number of ballot papers from six to two for the union council elections. The civil society bodies urged the ruling party of the Punjab to explain its position on the above issue.
